Why We Always Stop for a Campfire

People sometimes ask why we always seem to stop for a campfire.

Is it simply because we are cold?

Of course, the fire warms us up. But that is only part of it.

More Than a Way to Keep Warm

We cook over the fire: sausages, soup, coffee, tea and hot chocolate. You can even cook fresh salmon beside the flames.

If someone gets wet, gloves and clothes can dry by the heat. The fire gives us light, creates atmosphere and, honestly, it is simply nice to sit there and watch it.

The warmth does not only come from sitting beside the flames. Making a fire keeps you moving too. You collect wood, get the fire started, keep it going, prepare the food and make the coffee. There is always something small to do.

Where the Best Stories Are Told

But there is another reason we stop.

Somehow, the best stories are told around a campfire.

People share things there. New ideas come up. Sometimes the conversation becomes more personal, and people talk about things they might not normally say out loud.

I think there is something in us that feels safe around a fire. Maybe it is something very old.

When you sit and watch the flames, you slowly sink deeper into your own thoughts—and those thoughts become easier to share.

A campfire can do that. So can the sound of a river or a rapid. There is something about that steady sound that gives your mind more space.

The Part of the Day You Remember

At first, the fire is the reason you stop. You need it for warmth, light and food.

But little by little, the people sitting around it become just as important as the fire itself.

And that is probably why we keep coming back.

Sometimes, the best part of a day in Lapland is not the activity you planned. It is what happens afterwards: sitting beside the fire, drinking coffee and talking about whatever comes up.
