If you’ve already read our guide on What to Wear in Lapland with Kids, you’re ready for the next step — heading outside for some real Arctic playtime. Winter in Lapland isn’t just about staying warm; it’s about enjoying the snow, light, and laughter together. Here’s how kids (and parents!) can make the most of snowy days in Rovaniemi — from sleigh rides to our favourite winter playgrounds.
My tip for little ones: a sleigh instead of a stroller
I find a sleigh much handier than a stroller in the snow — it just glides better.
But if you travel with a stroller that has thick winter wheels, you can absolutely use that too. Still, in the snowy streets of Rovaniemi and Levi, a small sleigh is usually easier to pull.
Don’t forget a warm blanket, and if you happen to have a sheepskin from your stroller, it works perfectly in the sleigh as well. It keeps your baby cosy and adds a little bit of extra comfort for those peaceful winter walks.

Playing outside — it’s part of everyday life
In Lapland, darkness doesn’t stop children from playing outside. Kids here grow up spending time outdoors all year round — it’s simply part of everyday life.
Many playgrounds are well lit, so even when it’s dark, they can still run, slide, and laugh safely outside.
Playing in the snow is more than fun — it teaches balance, movement, and how to enjoy the elements. You’ll see families out with sleds, hot drinks, and rosy-cheeked smiles even when it’s –15 °C.

🌟 Vanhantorin Leikkipaikka
Right in the centre of Rovaniemi, this small but lovely playground has everything for a perfect winter afternoon. There’s a café called Navaa, where you can order something warm to drink, grab a snack, and even rent skates. It’s one of my favourite spots — there’s a great little hill for sledding, plenty of space for skating, and a cosy atmosphere that makes it extra special.
If the skating area hasn’t been made yet, it’s worth asking when they’ll start. Kids who love tractors, snowploughs, and fire trucks will be amazed watching the local crew prepare the ice and clear the snow. My son absolutely loves it — it’s like a little winter show just for him.

🐦 Angry Birds Playground
Another family favourite is the Angry Birds Playground, just a short walk from the city centre near the Ounasvaara area. It’s bigger and more adventurous, with slides, climbing frames, and plenty of space to run — all surrounded by snow-covered trees. Even in winter, kids love climbing, swinging, and jumping into soft snow.
The ground is well maintained, and there’s plenty of light in the darker hours. It’s a great place for children to burn energy while parents sip coffee from a thermos and enjoy the peaceful winter atmosphere.
Bonus tip: warm-up breaks are part of the adventure
After 30–45 minutes of play, head inside for a little break. A warm drink and dry mittens make a big difference before the next round in the snow.
💬 Final thought
Lapland with kids isn’t about fighting the cold — it’s about embracing it. Dress in layers, keep mittens dry, and let them play, explore, and laugh in the snow. Bundle up your baby in a sleigh, grab some hot chocolate, and enjoy the winter wonderland together.
