Räsymatto – A Finnish Weaving Tradition

Join our neighbours at the Old School in Porokari and experience traditional Finnish räsymatto weaving. A small, authentic moment of everyday Lapland life.

Traditional Finnish räsymatto rug being woven on a wooden loom in Lapland.

This is not a workshop in the usual sense.

It’s an invitation into a local tradition that has been part of Finnish homes for generations. At the Old School in Porokari, we join our neighbours from the village, who regularly gather here to weave traditional räsymatto rugs — something they’ve been doing for years as part of everyday life.

Together with Paul — and whenever possible one of our neighbours — they will show you how these rugs are made using traditional wooden looms, explain the techniques, and share the stories behind them.

What to Expect

  • A local social tradition. This is a real gathering place for the local community — not something created for tourists.
  • Learn from experience. Our neighbours will explain and demonstrate how räsymatto rugs are woven using traditional methods.
  • Try it yourself. You’ll have the chance to sit at the loom and weave a small part of the rug.
  • A piece of Lapland to take home. Your piece will be finished after your visit and sent to your home.
  • Coffee, tea & snacks. We take our time — with coffee, something sweet, and good conversation.

The Setting

The experience takes place at the Old School in Porokari, a place where locals still come together. It’s not just about weaving. It’s about spending time, sharing stories, and keeping traditions alive.

Combine This Experience

This experience is designed as a calm and cultural moment during your day.

It works perfectly in combination with outdoor activities such as:

• Off-Trail Snowmobiling
• Ice Fishing
• Husky Adventure
• Reindeer Experience
• Loimulohi Fire Experience

Because it’s relatively short, it fits naturally into your schedule. It’s also a great option on days when you prefer to spend more time indoors.

How It Works

Choose your main activity first.

We’ll then plan the Räsymatto experience at a moment that fits your day — depending on your other activities and the rhythm of the day.
